What Is Domain & Hosting & Why Its Required For Launching Website?
In my Web Development career I got many clients who are crazy to set their business online as they know the importance of it. But when I talked to them about domain and hosting, most of them said. What is it?
So, I found it as my duty to make it easier for them to understand about it and its role in launching Website.
Let’s create a scenario – How will you get a courier at your home? Obviously, you will share your address and the courier boy will deliver the package to you after he follows the address. This address is of your home where you are living with your family and are keeping all the things related to you.
Now let’s come to a website. When you want a person to visit your website, you need to share your domain or URL with that person.

Domain Is The Unique Identity, Just Like Your Home Address
The Domain / URL is unique just like your home address. This can be only one on web. Two people cannot have same. Example – facebook.com, google.com and mine is divyanshijuneja.com. No one else can have divyanshijuneja.com unless I am not leaving it. So we need to buy this domain or web address to share with your clients to land them to a particular IP Address or hosting.
Hosting Is Home For Files
Just like you keep your car & your furniture in your home, you need to store data or files that you want to share with your clients on a server. Your client cannot check what’s in your laptop but if you put the data on server he can access it by using internet. So you need to buy this space from the server to host your files.
So, domain is like your house address & hosting is like your home.
Important Terms :
- DOMAIN : A domain name (often simply called a domain) is an easy-to-remember name that’s associated with a Physical IP Address on the Internet. Examples of domain names – bluehost.com, divyanshijuneja.com, themeforest.net, etc.
- HOSTING : Web hosting is a service that allows organizations and individuals to post a website or web page onto the Internet. Websites are hosted, or stored, on special computers called Servers.
- SERVER : A server is a computer or system that provides resources, data, services, or programs to other computers, known as clients, over a network.
- SERVER IP : IP address is short for Internet Protocol address and is a string of numbers that usually looks something like this: 23.65.75.88.
Summary
So to launch a website, you need these both domain & hosting.
